It was actually an accident x'D I am working on a bigger picture right now and happened to like this better than latest reference, so this is her new reference too C:



Ugly Betty was born out of promising foundation lines, and was destined to be a top of the line western All-Rounder. When the filly was born, the owners scoffed down at her. "A roman nose!" The owner of the ranch scoffed. He spat at the helpless filly, "disgusting! She'll never amount to anything with that ugly face!" He kicked some straw bedding at her with the tip of his boot as she struggled to her feet to suckle. "Why even Ugly Betty would look better than a horse than this pathetic piece of... Wait. There we are!" He turned to the silent stable hand, "Name her Ugly Betty, put it on the papers. We'll keep this filly to see if she has any talent like her parents. There may be hope yet for this homely filly." And so, over the next few months Ugly Betty grew up alone with her mother in a small paddock. The owner of the ranch didn't want her around the other horses so her and her dam spent their days alone until the filly became a weanling, then she was alone. Even her dam didn't miss the deformed weanling, and ate at the luscious grass in the big pasture with the other horses. Ugly Betty sulked every day, eating little. One day when Ugly Betty was old enough for training, the ranch hand that had been there the day of her birth, approached Ugly Betty. The human was nicer to her than the others, and snuck her carrots when no one else would. She was sure to try and keep the horse alert and happy, but it was obvious Ugly Betty was depressed. The two worked for a long time on Barrels and reining, but had barely a thing to show for it. Ugly Betty was easily angered when the stable hand jerked at the reins for reining, or used her feet too much and she wasn't that good of a rider anyways. She always kept Ugly Betty too close to the third barrel during barrel racing and nearly every time she would come too close and cause Ugly Betty to knock it over. Not to mention the mare lacked the excitement in the training, she had no motive. On Ugly Betty's 7th birthday, she was pastured with the other horses for the first time. Mares were out grazing with their foals and the stallions were tucked away in another pasture. Ugly Betty awkwardly walked up to them and they all turned their heads to stare at the homely mare. Some trotted away from her, others seemed to laugh with outstretched necks. Ears back and with a hurt frown, Ugly Betty found her dam, who had a foal with her, Ugly Betty's little brother. He was perfect, and his coat shone a glistening fuzzy chestnut. Ugly Betty got closer for a better look, and she groomed his withers. Enraged and protective, her dam clocked back and kicked out at her daughter, knocking her square in the face. Shocked, Ugly Betty was stunned for a moment but then, seeing the challenge, reared and squealed at her mother, though not hitting her. Again her dam kicked at Ugly Betty, getting her in the belly. Ugly Betty bit at her dams neck hard then tossed her head and side-kicked at her. Though Ugly Betty wasn't full blown fighting her dam, the other mare was giving powerful blows to her, thinking that her foal was in danger. Finally they got into a more serious fight and, in a swift movement, Ugly Betty's hooves accidentally came down onto of the colt, breaking his legs. With a shrill squeal he collapsed, and his mother neighed loudly, biting hard on her daughters rump. Ugly Betty, confused and saddened, trotted away a short distance to observe what had happened. Finding that her son was hurt, the other mare stood by the colts body as he squealed with pain. Ugly Betty, ashamed, watched from her spot alone, ashamed in her accidental wrong doing. She hadn't meant to hurt her little brother. By the time the staff found out what had happened, the colt was exhausted and wouldn't even open his eyes. The owner of the stables immediately pointed fingers at Ugly Betty, "I want that disgrace of a mare sent off to the Slaughterhouse IMMEDIETLY! She has done nothing but wrong for our ranch since she was born, what a curse. Ugly Betty is a waste of money and time! Have her taken away at once." And so, they did.

It just so happened that Jen and Kayla were out that day to see if they could rescue any horses. They were there when Ugly Betty arrived. She was bleeding on her rump from whip marks and she looked quite depressed. Kayla immediately walked over to the horse that was fenced in now. She looked into the mares sad eyes, "You poor, beautiful girl... what have they done to you?" Ugly Betty took a sidelong look at the human, calmed by her soft voice. Her head was low. Kayla spoke again and outstretched her hand past the wire fence to try and pet her, "Why would they harm such a delicate and striking lady such as yourself?" Ugly Betty looked away and her head lowered even more. The sound of a screaming horse from inside made them both cringe, and as Kayla shuddered, tears in her eyes, the mare gave a huff. Kayla glared at the place and hopped the chain-link fence and walked slowly towards the mare, talking softly. She reached her and gave her calming strokes on the neck. The horses skin twitched at the first touch, but she didn't move. Kayla moved her hands down across her belly to her rump, where she examined the wounds. She walked over to the mares front and stroked her from in between her eyes down to her nose. The mare watched the girl with soft eyes, like how a mother would look to a precious child. Ugly Betty licked Kayla's hand a few time and placed her head against Kayla's chest, resting it there. Kayla looked over to meet eyes with her mother, who had been watching the whole time. Giving her a pleading look, Jen then rested her eyes on the mare, and back at their truck that had the trailer hooked up. She disappeared, walking away. Kayla felt Ugly Betty's warm breath against her lower abdomen, and it gave her Goosebumps. Immediately she knew. She had to save her. She ran her fingers down the mares cheeks then pulled a peppermint from her pocket and offered it to the mare. Looking up at Kayla she raised her head a little to sniff at the unusual item. She hadn't ever smelt that before, and with curiosity, gently nibbled it from Kayla's soft hand. Immediately as she tasted it, her eyes widened and sparkled. Never had she tasted anything like it, and it made her ears prick. She nickered softly, nudging Kayla for more. Kayla smiled and stroked the mare, then proceeded to walk to the chain link fence. Ugly Betty followed. They stood there waiting, hearing another horses scream that made more tears come to her eyes. She hated it here, where was Jen? A few min later Jen came walking up to the gate with a man at her side. The man unlocked the gate and Jen haltered the mare up. "Thank you.." Kayla smiled at Jen, tears streaming her face. Kayla took the lead and kissed Ugly Betty softly on the nose, "Your our beautiful girl now. I'll never let you be harmed again..." Kayla led her to the trailer. She took little caution to the trailer and loaded right up. After being tied, Kayla stroked her mares neck then walked out and closed up the doors before sitting in the truck. She watched Jen give the man money and the man hand something over. Papers of some sort. Jen, with a frown, walked back and the man stood there. She climbed in the truck and closed the door then started the truck and they drove away to WBS.

"What were those papers that man handed you, mom?" Kayla looked curiously at her mom after a long time of silence.
"They are here papers. Her name is Ugly Betty Babe, and has basic training enough to be a barrel racer and reiner. She is an American Paint Horse and is 6 years old as of today. They charged me a hefty price... I don't understand why they would want so much if they were just going to kill her."

Kayla winced and bit her lip to hold back tears. "I don't like the slaughterhouse. It's horrible..." She didn't talk for a while and Jen drove in silence. Her knuckles turned white from gripping the steering wheel so hard. Kayla finally found her voice, "Ugly Betty Babe is a horrible name. She isn't ugly at all, if anything she is the most beautiful mare I have ever seen!"

"Then you haven't seen many horses, Kayla. She does have nice lines and a beautiful coat, but that roman nose is just-"

"Gorgeous" Kayla cut her mother off. "I will never call her Ugly, she is Beautiful. BB, Beautiful Babe."

No one uttered a word the whole drive home.

Other: Ugly Betty was adopted from White Blood Stables as a rescue from Horse Slaughter. She was in perfect shape but since she had a roman nose, her owner didn’t value her. The only reason they had kept her all those years is because they wanted to train her and event her, but after she was poorly trained they never got around to entering her in shows, though she was determined and showed tallent in any western type thrown at her. Ugly Betty’s sudden acts of bitterness to the other horses also raised questions into her previous owners mind, they couldn’t afford her. And so they sold her to the horse slaughter, which is where WBS found her and bought her, taking her home to safety where she would be forever loved and cared for. She is a sweet mare and has a strong bond with her handler. She is non-aggressive to people, but she usually stays away from the other horses and can be mean to them. She has been known to try and steal other foals from their mothers. She is a great foster mother and enjoys watching over the foals, weanlings and yearlings.
